Figures related to carbon footprint

figures for every ton of CO2

every ton of CO2 is produced by

  1. 5000 miles driving, or 5000 miles in a plane, or 2500 miles cruising
  2. about £1000 shopping
  3. 1 ton of concrete
  4. 1 dog per year
  5. a vegan diet over 1 year: a meat diet produces twice as much CO2 (2 tons over a year) as a vegan diet (1 ton a year) 2019

every ton of CO2 produces

  1. an increase global temperature 1.5 trillionth of a degree. (2009)
  2. 0.5 tons of glacier melt per year, for 650 years, so 325 tons of melt in total (1.2 trillion tons of glaciers melt each year (2021), caused by the CO2 produced since 1850 (2400 billion tons, and the one ton of CO2 last 650 years)
  3. flooding (0.3million sq. km flooding each year (2021) total, divided by the 2400 billion tons C02) = 0.1 square metre (but 0.1 sq. metres for each of 650 years = 65 sq metres =size of a small garden (1/4 of an acre)
  4. fire (3 million sq. km fire each year total, divided by the 2400 billion tons C02) = 1 square metres a year (but 1 sq. metres for each of 650 years = 2.5 acres in total (1 football field of fire in total)
  5. a 1000th of a climate death in total (5m climate deaths a year, divided by the 2400 billion tons C02, over 650 years)
  6. 8 tons dead fish per ton of CO2. There are 3.5 trillion fish in the world, and 2023 60% are under threat, that is about 2 trillion (from the 240b tons of CO2 etc), 8 tons dead fish per ton of CO2 2023

more figures about climate

  1. 5 million people a year die from climate change already (2021) , or 2 million (Lancet 2020)
  2. IPCC 2023 we produce about 60 billion tons of CO2 a year, 240 in the last 300 years.
  3. But the CO2 in the atmosphere lasts over 650 (300-100 NASA) years
  4. A new petrol car needs 6 tons of CO2 to produce, and new electric 9 tons, that is its carbon footprint (2022) from manufacturing. Here I use an average of 7.5 tons CO2/car.
An average car emits 5 tons of CO2 per year (EPA 2022)
  5. 0.3 million sq. km flooding each year (2021) on average. Flooding in the world varies from year to year. Last year 2022, 40,000 square miles. Most years have less flooding, although the average is increasing. "Worldwide, 2.23 million square kilometers, or about 861,000 square miles, were flooded at some point between 2000 and 2018, affecting between 255 million and 290 million people...I have divided this by 8)
  6. 3 million sq. km forest fire each year (2018) ,
  7. An average person in the UK produces 10 tons CO2 a year, double the world average. (2023)
  8. A rich person in the UK will produce 40 tons CO2 a year
  9. 5000 miles of driving = one ton CO2 for fuel alone
  10. 5000 miles of flying in a commercial jet= one ton per person fuel alone
  11. 2500 miles cruise = one ton per person fuel alone
  12. Electric cars: If their power was all from sustainable sources, then their contribution would be in their manufacture only. But we will never be able to produce enough electricity for all cars to be powered sustainably. There simply is not room for enough wind farms or solar power. Land is needed for trees and other
  13. plants..these convert the CO2 to oxygen. In the UK about 40% of electricity is from renewable sources (2022). But his still has a carbon footbprint..the wind generators and the nuclear power stations are bult with concrete etc.
  14. There is not enough land for any carbon capture method to massively reduce the CO2.
  15. 32 tons C02 a new kitchen (2022)

Abbreviations etc

"Average annual GHG emissions during 2010–2019 were higher than in any previous decade, but the rate of growth between 2010 and 2019 (1.3% yr-1 ) was lower than that between 2000 and 2009 (2.1% year1). Historical cumulative net CO2 emissions from 1850 to 2019 were 2400 ±240 GtCO2. Of these, more than half (58%) occurred between 1850 and 1989 [1400 ±195 GtCO2], and about 42% between 1990 and 2019 [1000 ±90 GtCO2]. Global net anthropogenic GHG emissions have been estimated to be 59±6.6 GtCO2-eq in 2019, about 12% (6.5 GtCO2-eq) higher than in 2010 and 54% (21 GtCO2-eq) higher than in 1990. By 2019, the largest growth in gross emissions occurred in CO2 from fossil fuels and industry (CO2-FFI) followed by CH4, whereas the highest relative growth occurred in fluorinated gases (F-gases), starting from low levels in 1990. (high confidence)"

A new SUV= 7.5 tons CO2

A new SUV car manufacture produces about 7.5 tons of CO2, and produces 5 tons CO2 year (fuel, maintenance). If electric slightly less fuel is used, but more CO2 in production. 30 new SUVs will produce 1 climate death in production and use.

5m climate death/2400b tons CO2, production 7.5 tons, use produces another 5 tons a year over 20 years (EPA 2022. about 100 tons C02 in total, about 1/10 th a climate death...so (taking into account all the 100 tons CO2 produced over the lifeime of the car,) 10 new SUV produce one climate death.
